Get a Job!

When we were in college and newly married Spencer and I were friends with a couple who were both athletes for BYU. Unfortunately, neither one of them were currently participating in their respective sports (basketball and track) because of injuries so they had more time on their hands than they were used to. The husband filled his time with pre-med classes and other related pre-med activities. He has since decided to go and has nearly completed law school because his wife though it would be "less stressful," but I digress. She, on the other hand, had the typical class load and nothing else to fill her time with. So she complained to him that she was bored and he needed to spend more time with her. His response? He told her to, "get a job."

For some reason I still find this hilarious.

A Typical Day in the Life of Me

My life is boring. That's why we don't keep up our other blog. Spencer goes to school and I go to work, school, and attempt to start up a home business selling beauty products in my spare time. Oh yeah, and apparently I'm in charge of everything related to the house, fitness, and other such life things. So I'm pretty busy. But also pretty boring.

A typical weekday for me involves waking up some time between 6am and 7:30am depending on how ambitious I am and how many times I've reset the alarm. I spend an hour or so getting ready and then walk to work. I tell myself I'll get there by 8, but I usually don't make it in until 8:30 on a good day and 9 on a bad day. I spend the next few hours in front of a computer in a tiny cubicle in a freezing cold hallway in a corner of the western half of the hospital looking and numbers and such on one screen and entering them into slots and such on the other. To augment my boredom, I take breaks to read blogs, comments, facebook, anything and listen to TV on hulu.com. I don't even miss seeing the picture. Seriously. You should try it some time. Around noon I have lunch. While eating lunch, I typically either go back to work or I read ethical stuff for my classes. Then I spend the next 4 hours or so doing more of the same data entry stuff and walk home. Once a week or get a break and head over to the med school for class where I spend an hour or so discussing theories of ethics and like any good philosopher, end up debating a lot without ever reaching a conclusion (which is frustrating for a scientist, by the way). By the time I get home it's time for dinner. If I'm in a good mood, I'll make it. If I've planned a recipe, Spencer will. Otherwise, we scavenge for bagels/chips/whatever we can find. By the time all that is done, it's around 7pm. On a good day, I'll break out my contact list and try to book/sell/recruit like a good BeautiControl consultant. On a bad day I ignore it and pretend that people will magically show up on my doorstop and hand me gobs of money (this has yet to happen, but I'm holding out hope). Sometimes we also play racquetball. Then comes TV watching with perhaps a little knitting thrown in. Then comes bed. I spend my weekends at spas (if it's a good one) and doing all the errands and cleaning I can't keep up with during the week. Oh and church. That takes up a good chunk of time on Sunday, especially since they gave us afternoon church this year.

So. Like I said, boring. So why did I write this post you ask? Well, because people seem to blog about what they know. And since what I know is mostly bioethical and boring, I choose to blog about the other thing that I know and that's my day to day life. Other people seem to be pulling if off with their kids, and I don't see why I can't do the same. Oh yeah. It's because kids add excitement to life and data entry does not. Remember that the next time your kids do something annoying.

I guess this means I need a new blog topic.

Is Anybody Out There?

I am 99.99% sure that no one is aware of this blog let alone reads it since I've never really told anyone about it, but I just thought I'd ask...is anyone out there? Leave a comment if you are.

"Being Erica"

I do a lot of data entry at work which means I listen to either music or TV on hulu.com. Recently, I started listening to a show called "Being Erica." It's on soap net, so I'm sure it's not the cleanest show in the world to watch, but I really like listening to it. The basic premise of the show is that the main character, Erica, meets a psychiatrist who gives her the chance to go back and try to fix her regrets. She usually ends up learning some valuable lesson about herself or her relationships with others, but the part that got me interested was that the premise of would you change your past mistakes if you were given the option? I have made my fair share of mistakes and I regret some of the decisions that I've made. That being said, I feel like we are a sum of our past decisions and if we were to change any one of them, we wouldn't be where we are today. While I'm not exactly thrilled to be doing glorified data entry day in and day out, I am happy with my life overall and am working hard to improve it. If given the chance, I don't think I would go back and change a thing. After all, there's no telling if changing something I regretted would have prevented me meeting and marrying Spencer or being in the place I am today. Would you change anything?

Y(MCA) Not?

So my last post detailed my plan to follow Denise Austin's new bootcamp workout DVD. I managed to eak out a few workouts while on vacation, but didn't really stick to it when I got back. Spencer and I had been debating joining a gym to play racquetball, and when the YMCA annoucned they would waive the activation fee ($65!!) we went for it. So far, we've played twice, but we've set up 3 more court times. In addition to that, I'm planning on alternating the days I don't go to the Y with that bootcamp DVD so it wasn't a total money waster.

Here's to a healthy new year!
